| Agricultural and Pastoral Production |
Agriculture in Mesoamerica came out of necessity. When the first migrants came during the last ice age, and since temperatures were going up the large animals died out from over-hunting and failure to adapt. Some of the crops they grew were beans, chili peppers, avocados, squashes, and gourds. The Olmecs began the process of domestication with animals, like turkeys and dogs for food. |
| Trade and Commerce |
Jade and obsidian were traded for, as well as the skin of animals. The Olmecs bought raw jade and fashioned it into decorated objects, which they traded to the areas around them. |
| Labor System |
The commoners were the main laborers of Mesoamerica, controlled by the ruling elite to build things such as statues, decorating the capitals, drainage systems, and moving the massive stones for the construction. |
